Al-Youm Al-Sabeh, a daily online newspaper based in Cairo, announced last week that its reporters had obtained a working draft of a new law that guarantees greater freedoms of organization to Egyptian workers and liberalizes restrictions on trade unions.  Proposed as one of a number of post-revolutionary reforms, the Ministry of Manpower compiled the law with input from the Center for Trade Union and Workers Services.  While the newspaper did not publish the actual text of the draft, reports indicate that the Ministry intends to bring Egyptian labor law into conformity with International Labor Organization conventions.  Calls for an end to government encroachment on trade unions have become a major part of the protest movement’s platform following the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in February.
